What is the Wilson Reading Program?

Wilson is a nationally recognized and researched reading program based on the Orton-Gillingham philosophy and principles. Wilson is a complete curriculum for teaching decoding and spelling. It has proven highly successful with students who have had difficulty with traditional reading instruction.

What will my student learn?

The following skills are developed and reinforced throughout the program:

Phonemic segmentation, alphabetic principle, decoding/spelling, vocabulary development, sight word reading, reading fluency, comprehension, metacognition

Why does Wilson work?

Wilson is cumulative - students work from sounds to syllables, words to sentences, stories to books, learning the structure of English through constant repetition and review. Each step build on the one before. Students learn concepts thoroughly, moving through the program at their own pace with one-on-one instruction.

Wilson is multi-sensory - skills are taught and reinforced auditorily, verbally, tactilely and visually until the skills are automatic.

Wilson is integrated - the program is organized around the six syllable types found in the English language. Lessons are taught with phonetically controlled material and cover only the concepts being taught or previously taught.
